Ghostlight Theatre: Sweeney Todd
Sun 23 August, 2:30pm
A Musical Thriller
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Hugh Wheeler
From an Adaptation by Christopher Bond
Ghostlight Theatre is excited to present Stephen Sondheim’s classic version of a tale that started life in 1830s London as a ‘penny dreadful’ broadsheet, recounting the tale of Sweeney, a psychopath who killed for profit and Mrs Lovett, a harridan who baked the bodies into pies. Capturing the popular taste for melodrama, it soon became a play performed in the London ‘blood tubs’; theatres devoted to sensationalist repertoire.
Out of such strange origins, Sondheim and librettist Hugh Wheeler have woven a stunning musical that is both dark and hilarious, and in the enthusiastic hands of this talented cast and creative team, it is certain to entertain and thrill.
